Marlene Horning-Jackson Quilting Tips

  • If you have brittle old cotton thread, put it in a plastic bag and then in your freezer for a couple days. Take it out, let set for 24 hours, and it will be revived.
  • Cotton batting will let your wallhangings hang smoother than polyester.
  • To keep your thread from knotting, run it through beeswax.
  • Never take your quilts to the dry cleaner. Wash them in Orvus soap even if they are 100 years old.
  • Stack fabrics right sides together whenever possible for cutting. You handle the pieces less when you are ready to stitch them together.
  • Sharpen chalk pencils and other soft pencils with an emery board.
  • When traveling, take a high wattage light bulb to put in motel room lamps so you can see better for sewing.
  • Mini irons and mini iron holders are great.
